Semaphore is a type of communication where flags are waved at certain angles to convey letters.

Replaced by radio in todays modern battlefields because waving bright red flags is likely to get you shot at.

Much beloved by the Matelots as it allows them ham it up while sending.

Does not have anything to do with 3 Para Mortar Platoon doing their version of YMCA.
