Standard nick name for an officer. Particularly applied to members of the cavalry and the better infantry regiments.

They may or may not look like this...

But their trousers almost certainly will... together with red socks, brogues, hacking jacket, pin-stripe shirt and yellow tie.

The younger ones will have the really enthusiastic expression ... but that soon gets knocked out of them.
