Rugby League was first played in 1895 and differs substantially from the game of rugby union. Teams consist of 13 players and 4 substitutes. The game is played across the whole of the UK, however, the majority of the teams are in Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Within the British Army the game is organised by the Army Rugby League. The Army squad competes against the Royal Navy and RAF teams as well as other civil service sides, e.g. police and prison service. Corps compete for the Lawson Cup and units for the Yeoman Cup.
