The Royal Gurkha Rifles is a regiment of the British Army. It is unique in that it recruits Gurkhas from Nepal.
Following the government's announcement to restructure the Army, and with the handing back of Hong Kong to the Chinese in 1997 (necessitating the withdrawal of the military garrison), the size of the Brigade of Gurkhas had to be reduced. Prior to the change the regiments were:
- 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles)
- 6th Queen Elizabeth's Own Gurkha Rifles
- 7th Duke of Edinburgh's Own Gurkha Rifles
- 10th Princess Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles On 1st July 1994 the four rifle regiments reformed into one large regiment: The Royal Gurkha Rifles (RGR), consisting of three battalions. However, on the withdrawal of 1RGR from Hong Kong to the UK, 3RGR was disbanded in November RGR is currently in Shorncliffe, Kent while 1RGR are in Brunei. The Regiment provides one reinforcement company as D (Tamandu) Company. The Regiment also provides the majority of the manpower for the two demonstration companies, at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and the Infantry Training Centre Wales.
