Introduced in 1919, it was originally awarded for eighteen years’ service, but this was reduced to fifteen years in 1977. Bars were issued from 1944 onwards for additional periods of equal service.

In 1944 the medal was extended in personnel of the Commonwealth air forces. It is still awarded to personnel of the Royal New Zealand Air Force.
