QUIZ OF THE WEEK
'And now... live from Norwich... it's the Quiz of the Week' was the overly excitable opening to Anglia's weekly quiz program The Sale of the Century - fronted by the suave, pastel-suited and debonair Nicholas Parsons. Running in the 1970's, the only thing 'live' about it was the audience - and that's open to conjecture.
It was, however, the start of rabid consumerism with items discounted to tiny numbers that could be bought by the 'pounds' you won by answering questions. Items on 'sale' were pretty nasty with the really good prizes requiring you to come back for several weeks running thus reducing the chance of you winning the star prize - invariably a speedboat. (think the speedboat was Bullseye's ultimate prize! 70's must haves were things like fur coats)
Tacky in the extreme, featuring contestants who looked bored titless, it was one of those things you remember from your childhood (if you are getting on a bit like what I am). 'The Sale' was brought back recently with (a fully clothed ... thank fuck) Keith Chegwin in the quiz master role, but he really needs to drink more decaf or masturbate more often!
