Passchendaele

The Battle of Passchendaele took place between 31st July and 6th November 1917, when the Belgian villiage of Passchendaele / Passendale was finally taken by Canadian troops.
This battle is also called the Third Battle of Ypres, or just Third Ypres.
I died in Hell
(they called it Passchendaele); my wound was slight
and I was hobbling back; and then a shell
burst slick upon the duckboards; so I fell
into the bottomless mud, and lost the light
