The military one, as opposed to the popular beat combo, was formed in 1645 by Oliver Cromwell and Thomas Fairfax. It was, "new," in the sense that it was a properly organised, trained and victualled Army. The fashion hitherto had been for a general invitation to turn up for a fight - pointy stick and spare pan-loaf optional.
