In 1867 an English gentleman, the Marquis of Queensbury, developed a new set of rules for boxing intended to make it a "gentleman's sport".

Up till then boxing was bare knuckle, beat the man till he's half dead sport for the underclasses. The main innovations the Marquis came up with were boxing gloves as a protective device for the user's hands and opponent's head as well as the prohibition against hitting a man when he's already down. Timed rounds were introduced rather than just carrying on till someone fell over.

Rules were all about fair play and being manly and gentlemanly without the likelihood of losing all one's teeth and getting a brain haemorrhage.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should the above rules be tried in a street fight otherwise you WILL get your arrse handed to you.
