b 24 June 1850, d 5 June 1916
Another in the long list of Irishmen who fought for Britain. Also a member of the much shorter list of Royal Engineers who amounted to anything.
Led the British forces at the battle of Omdurman in 1898, took a leading part in the Boer War, was C in C India for 10 years and was killed during 1916 when the ship he was on was sunk, probably by a mine.
He face is one of the most memorable ever seen on a British soldier, mainly due to its use on the famous recruiting poster on WW1.
