Buffer Zone

Also called a De-Militarized Zone (DMZ)

Piece of ground separating two sides who (although they hate each other and can't wait to rip the enemy's throats out with their teeth) are currently not trying to practice genocide right now.

Examples would be the gap between the Greek and Turkish bits of Cyprus or the altar to the mine that separates the north and south bits of Korea.

These zones are usually patrolled by UN troops (think targets on a shooting gallery with nice blue helmets who usually aren't allowed to shoot back) or Spams (who need no encouragement to shoot the sh!t out of anything that moves).
