A Regiment formed by the Colonial Office from volunteers right across the British West Indies in 1915. Volunteers of Caribbean origin in the UK were later allowed to transfer from the British Army.

It should on no account be confused with the West India Regiment which was a Regular formation with links going back to the American Revolution.

The BWIR eventually totalled twelve battalions, and was engaged in various roles in France and Italy and the Near East. It was disbanded in 1921.
