The Atlantic Wall (Atlantikwall) was a series of interconnected strong points, bunkers, fortifications and other defensive measures built by the Germans between 1942 and 1944 intended to stop the Allies from getting a toehold in occupied Europe from the sea.

The defenses were never completed due to the use of forced labour, a lack of real enthusiasm from the German builders and the sheer scale of the project.

Erwin Rommel was appalled at the lack of preparation he found when he took command of the defenses in early 1944 and never really had the time to get things improved before its backdoors got kicked in on 6th June 1944
