The AR-18 made by Armalite Inc. is a 5.56mm assault rifle originally designed as an improvement to the AR-15 (also developed by Armalite).
The AR-18, and its semi-auto only counterpart, the AR-180 were also manufactured in the UK by Sterling Armaments. Some of these weapons somehow made their way to Northern Ireland where they were used by various paramilitary groups. This is when the "Armalite and the Ballot Box" strategy came out.
The AR-18 didn't have much success in sales as a military rifle, but the Sterling LAR, the Singaporean SAR-180 and the SA80's actions are based on the AR-18 design.
