79 Railway Squadron
The main railway operating unit of the British Army is called 79 Railway Squadron Royal Logistics Corps. Prior to its amalgamation into the RLC the Railway squadron was based in Moenchengladbach in West Germany and was part of the Royal Corps of Transport, having been transferred from the Royal Engineers at the demise of steam power.
Today the squadron is based at the Port and Maritime unit depot in Marchwood, Hampshire. From here soldiers of this unit have travelled as required to operate the railway for the Army's requirements. One of their best "press" moments was reported by the BBC, this was the "Train for Life"
