The 4th/7th Dragoon Guards were formed in 1922 by the amalgamation of 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards and 7th Dragoon Guards (Princess Royal's). The title was amended in 1935 to the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the regiment mechanised three years later, becoming part of the Royal Armoured Corps just prior to WW2.

In 1992 the regiment was again amalgamated, this time with the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards to form the Royal Dragoon Guards.
