- The Army Apprentices College were given a pressie by the good folk of Chepstow.
- 4 Regt RA start an emergency tour of Northern Ireland
- Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire return to the UK from Cyprus.
- 24 January - Japanese soldier Shoichi Yokoi found on Guam after hiding in the jungle for 28 years.
- 30 January - Bloody Sunday.
- 22 February - Aldershot bombing. IRA murders 7 people.
- 19 July - The Battle of Mirbat.
- 21 July - Bloody Friday, IRA murders 9 people and injures 130 in a series of 22 bombings.
- 1 September - Second Cod War with Iceland (or was it Bejams?).
- 16 October - Rioting at Maze Prison.
