Major Events

The following major events took place in 1971:

• 3 January - Open University begins its programmes on the BBC.
• 15 February - Decimalisation Day. The UK switches to decimal currency. Some of us are still struggling with the idea.
• 23 February - Melinda Messenger, 34DD-22-34, born in Swindon.
• 29 July - British government cancels the Black Arrow.

Military Events

The following military events took place in 1971:

• 25 January - Idi Amin deposes Milton Obote in a coup.
• 29 October - Vietnam War. Number of US troops drops to 196,700 (lowest figure since 1966).
• 3 December - Indo-Pakisatan War breaks out.
