The following major events took place in 1969:

• 1 January Rupert Murdoch purchases The News of the World.
• 1 April Hawker Siddeley Harrier enters service with the RAF. Yes, April 1st.
• 21 July The first Man landed on the Moon. Or faked it in a film studio, if you purchase your headgear from Tin-Foil Hats-r-Us.
• 5 October Monty Python's Flying Circus premieres on the BBC.

The following military events took place in 1969:

• 20 April British troops called out to assist the Royal Ulster Constablulary.
• 10 May Vietnam War, Battle of Dong Ap Bia (aka Hamburger Hill) begins.
• 19 May French Foreign Legion paras land at Kolwezi, Congo, to rescue European hostages.
• Formation of The Royal Regiment of Wales.
