Major Events

The following major events took place in 1957:

• Federation of Malaysia granted independance within the Commonwealth.

• Rioting in Singapore.

• Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, is launched by the USSR, prompting the Space Race and resulting in the Moon landings, the GPS system and aspects of the Internet.

Military Events

The following military events took place in 1957:

• 16 Regt RA returned to Bulford from Cyprus.

• Handley-Page Victor enters service with the RAF.

• Production of the French MAS 49-56 rifle commences.

• 28 Engineer Regiment RE disbanded, until being reformed in 1971.
