• November 24 Abel Tasman becomes the first European to discover the island Van Diemen's Land (later renamed Tasmania).

The following military events took place in 1642:

• August 22 King Charles I raises the his royal standard over Nottingham Castle, so declaring war on his own Parliament.

• November 13 Battle of Turnham Green. King Charles's army of 12,000 face the 24,000 strong Parliamentarian army and neither side wants to force a fight. Its not really a battle as casualties estimates range from "less than 50 men" to "5 cows and a dog".
