The following major events took place in 1642:

  • November 24 - Abel Tasman becomes the first European to discover the island Van Diemen's Land (later renamed Tasmania).
  • 25 December - Sir Issac Newton born.

Military Events

The following military events took place in 1642:

  • August 22 - King Charles I raises the his royal standard over Nottingham Castle, so declaring war on his own Parliament.
  • November 12 - Battle of Brentford - Royalist Victory by Prince Rupert in the outskirts of London. More information here
  • November 13 - Battle of Turnham Green. King Charles's army of 12,000 face the 24,000 strong Parliamentarian army and neither side wants to force a fight. Its not really a battle as casualties estimates range from "less than 50 men" to "5 cows and a dog". But, its arguably the most important battle not fought in English history as its the closest that the Royalists got to London in the English Civil War. Enlarge your anorak here.
