Re: Best weapons / optimum calibres
I would argue that the Steyr AUG is the easiest assault type weapon to teach to a reasonable competence level. Certainly due for an update/redesign (their are newer versions around), but as a system its got a lot going for it.

Sorry to be sceptical, but I doubt he can consistently do 10 round groups at that size, it's just not ballistically plausible with that system.

The roller delay mechanism is really not suited to a weapon of that calibre and that weight class, and over time causes the receiver walls to bulge slightly, which leads to faster ejection, more wear, and more recoil.
The violent ejection in a beautiful arc seems purpose designed to give the position of the firer away. ...All shall kneel before the Gloryhole of the Old Gods and receive their blessings

The Bundeswehr still sometimes use them as designated marksman rifles (DMR's), not a sniper rifle. Maybe that is what you mean?

Before anybody else pipes up and get very cross, I should point out that your policeman's mate is not a sniper, he is a police marksman. A different beast entirely.

Re: Best weapons / optimum calibres
Only 4-5000 rounds in comparative tests (civilian role) with other firearms. I am not operationally experienced with this weapon. My opinions are entirely personal but based on some level of experience. It's popularity I would suggest is that it can be handled by the warry dwarves that populate the planet outside the first world
