Re: Best weapons / optimum calibres
Hmm. I wonder what the US military classification for the AA-12 is. you know, the one that it would have if it was an in-service weapon.
I am a horrible civilian-type, but I work in the industry and hang around here to get some insight.

Re: Best weapons / optimum calibres
Sorry if this has been bought up before, but a quick trawl didn't pick it up...
PDW's - P90, Mp7 et al - 5.7mm/4.6mm cartridges, yes I know their designed for armour penetration, but if it's arguable that 5.56 isn't powerful enough, how can anyone expect those rounds to be better? I remember reading a ballistics gel report done in yankland, where the Professor performing the test described the power (it was the p90's 5.7 round I think) as so weak it would put any mission where the weapon was used, into serious danger. I apologise, it was a while ago, i'll try dig it out.
The PDW concept is a good one, if old (M1 Carbine, anyone?) but surely just a smaller version of a full sized carbine is a better way to go? ie M416 in 10inch barrel config, or, even better, the http://www.lwrifles.com/Products/PSD...7/Default.aspx seems even better. If you want to deal with threats further away you need a rifle. I think this is where the AR15/M16 concept originated - as a lightweight rifle for rear echelon troops who didn't need to be encumbered with a full sized battle rifle. That said, it's now become the benchmark of the infantry assault rifle.

Shotguns? Guns that fire shot?
Oh you must be the brains..... etc etc.
We have just rolled out Benelli for the point, so we will have a quick (2-3 rds rapid) area-ish weapon for initial contact. More nasty bits going in the right direction than a burst from 5.56mm!

Re: Best weapons / optimum calibres
You will be familiar with that most specialised of ammo, the Malay load then. :D The 870 was very good as point for jungle ops where initial contact was usually five meters or less. Shottys are bloody good when used sensibly, cant argue with the hole a one and a half ounce solid makes.

ps. shotgun loaded with buckshot or slugs is excellent for urban or jungle fighting where the range does not exceed 100 yards.

Re: Best weapons / optimum calibres
That's right, but I prefered a load of eight stainless steel ball bearings for the spread (the flechette load was far too accurate!).

It wasn't an Armalite, we already had them. Any ideas anyone? When in danger, fear or doubt
