Re: Search for an *Ally* star
Question; the Septics seem to always have their weapon hanging fron some kind of sling/carabiner/cord, where as the Brits are usually spotted sling free. Tactical doctrine/personal preference or just common sense?

Re: Search for an *Ally* star
Why use a SUSAT/other sight on a Jimpy/any area weapon with a 'beaten zone'? And if the first round misses then theres only another 199 ready!

Re: Search for an *Ally* star
It still helps to be able to identify targets though doesn't it? If you can't see where you're supposed to be shooting then you aint much good! :P

Target Identification, peering through car windscreens earlier is safer..

I was told on two occasions years apart that the no-sling thing is so that you keep the weapon in your hand ready to go as opposed to dangling it around you somewhere where it might not be where you want it.

As for the good or bad of it, I think that the more kit hanging off you the more there is to snag, get caught etc whilst bounding around the embassy garden on fire. I for one like the idea of being able to shed weight/encumberence as soon as possible should the need take me, or worse should i get hit and a mucker has to carry me out (nb carrying injured muckers whilst both of you are wearing bergens, cba, wpns etc is no fun). Though I seriously doubt this is the reason for having no sling.
The wearing of a sling does allow you to do things with your hands without putting the weapon down so perhaps it is a "choose to task/role thing?"
Perhaps a Para can confirm???

Re: Search for an *Ally* star
When L85 arrived we were virtually instructed to use the sling as taught. On ops at the time and I used mine at almost full extent so it was across my waist but still clipped together allowing me to use it without having to fanny around with the clips.
I found it very handy on green jobs such as vcps etc. Having a sling allowed you to carry extra kit such as jerry cans and still get to your rifle across your front if necessary.
The lads in the rifle coys had to fit theres as if it would walk off if not stapled to them. They looked like legionnaires on parade and very daft in my opinion.
The yanks for many years didnt have 3 point slings so when we put ours on general issue it looks like they acquired some.
The issies have done it for years especially with the M16's attaching at the front sight ramp. The rear attachment is an around the butt strap and looks naff but works well.

Cue an opportunity to join the black nasty brigade:

At least this shows the sling fitted slack enough to use.
By the way, red angle torch for VCPs. Always carried out there by us."I'd rather be a tired old Has been, than a tired old Never Has Been!!"

I remember that well, and then there was the RLC who could be relied to have their wpn clingfilmed and in a Bergen in the cab..The lads in the rifle coys had to fit theres as if it would walk off if not stapled to themBrummie joke During the war, a British General visited an Army Hospital of the South Staffordshire Regiment.
Sensing a doom and gloom atmosphere he tried to rally the men by asking "Now you men didn't come here to die did you?"
To which Aynuk and Ayli replied " Na sur, way booth coomd ere yesterdie."

Re: Search for an *Ally* star
For me - not having a sling was:
1. Keeping the weapon to hand
2. The ease in moving from one sholder to the other
3. Didn't get caught on stuff - particularly in the J.
4. When crawl around you would knee on by accident and nearly pull you head off.
5. Meant crows would actually keep it in the shoulder.
And if you did need to a sling - climbing up something - you had some a length of para cord tied at one end to your gat & with a small snap link (can't spell caribenier) to tie to the rear sling gadget - cord was then wrapped around the iron sight of forestock..... but then who gives a feck just do what you see fit"How can you shoot women and children?"
"Easy! You just don't lead them as much!"
