A few Pigs ended up as hard targets at Otterburn. There were a couple on the LAW range that looked like they'd been attacked by red indians on account of the scores of 66 sub-cal devices sticking out of the tyres.
There were a couple dotted around Whinney hill at Catterick aswell. I also remember one turning up at my school fete in the 70s and giving us all rides around the playing field. There was about 15 kids in the back & another 10 on the roof!!!! Imagine that nowadays with all them H&S nazis knocking about !!!
the land rover snatch is alright in provinces like northern ireland where its cold
as for a 3528cc v8 petrol engine where iraq summer global temp is over the flashpoint of
ul gas or unleaded petrol, (even close to the flashpoint of diesel 60 degrees)
therefore a nice timebomb i reckon
(why i shunned away from the UBRE course before deployment)
its about time they diesel converted snatch if there insistant on using them in iraq
but why not use the 300tdi diesel wolf engine instead of some random lump the army
bought off some geezer down the scrapper for 50 quid a pop?
as for the tavern who has never driven one and not hummed the a team theme
come on dont lie!!!!!!!
...the notorious bright pink Abbot Gun of Brixton (complete with 8' high papier mache pig wearing a police helmet sat on the top)....
The guy who owns that Abbot lives in Norbury, South London, just around the corner from the school my wife works at.
I remember back in the early 90's he had a lot of grief from Croydon Council over the inflatable Winston Churchill he had on top of his house.
Oh and Rob, ULGAS has a flashpoint of -40oC and Dieso has a flashpoint of 58oC (although not Dieso KT as issued in Iraq as this is made from Avtur F35 (FP of 38oC) with Lubisol added. The nice (relatively) low FP of AVTUR and friendly locals always made the run up to Al Amarah interesting.
Damn, West Moors was an exciting place to do a Pet Lab course......
PS, there are Snatch waggons in Iraq that run on Dieso but funny old thing the RAF Regt have got them, for the hazardous journey between the Pizza Hut in J1 village and their accommodation no doubt.
"No good decision was made from a swivel chair" George Patton
"we know where they [the weapons] are. They're in the area around Tikrit and Baghdad and east, west, south and north somewhat." Donald Rumsfeld
I have just read with great sadness the names of the two British soldiers killed yesterday.
I note from the video that was on the major news channels, the presence of two Snatch vehicles.
Whilst the details of the incident have yet to come out, the initial reports are of roadside bomb.
I posted this thread in the hope that someone with sense, military or policitian might actually pick up on this and other peoples views on Iraq, as I understand they monitor this site.
...........naive I know.
As I mentioned the US army is unarmouring anything that moves. I notice that both Warrior and Challenger have now had additional armour added.
..........So why will the MOD/government not provide our troops either with armour, tracked or wheeled that will give the troops a fighting chance of survival. I fully understand the need to engage with the local population, armour can be counter productive. I also understand that the insurgents are becoming more adept at taking on armour, but Snatch it seems is no better than a Wolf with grills on the windows. Issuing enhanced body armour for crewmen, is a half arsed cop out and a cheap alternate, and none too popular if you read soldier magazine.
Yes I am angry, and I worry for my friends and colleagues who have to endure this Government's continued lack of support for our troops. I am also angry at our head shed for not having the balls to do the right thing and request/give the troops the right equipment,
I'm a bit concerned that some of the discussion on this thread is getting a bit close to the wind on OPSEC. We really should not be discussing any aspects of the vulnerability of in-service vehicles. I've already mentioned this to the moderator, who is keeping an eye on things. People with a bit of inside knowledge should really think thrice before posting anything that could potentially be of use to the opposition.

Not wishing to take anything away from what you wrote, 'Tooldtodieyoung', but I expect you know that that bit is definitely an exaggeration.
...hang on hackle.. you have a point but......
CAV 100E
Riot Protected Personnel Carrier.
Specially designed to provide cost effective protection for personnel engaged in combating Civil Disturbances, the CAV100E affords excellent protection against hand thrown missiles (rocks, petrol bombs, all handguns and shotguns).
My point is Snatch/CAV is not up to the job, and the government/MOD, unlike the US, seem unwilling to fund something that is...! We'll be out by the end of 2006 so why spend money on things that we won't need soon... you can hear the mandarins in Whitehall.
NP offer British body armour for £170 a set see the above link, compare that to the US Interceptor at $1,500 a set!!!!

..you might want to have a word with NP Aerospace and their competitors..., all information in this thread is in the public domain...
