The FIDF do not have "the Steyr", the have the Army Universal Gun (AUG) which is manufactured by Steyr-Mannlicher in Kleinraming. If you were going to call the bloody thing by it's manufacturer's name, you would be better off calling it a Mannlicher - because Steyr is a geographical term relating to Styria, a province of Austria renowned for its hunting and weaponry.
I am sorry. I have had a very frustrating morning and that brings out the pedant in me...not that it has far to travel!
Armee Universal Gewehr (AUG)
Ah you rat, you got me. Ouch, targets will fall when hit!
I've used all three - F88A1 Austeyr, SA80A1 and A2.
F88A1 was definitely better than the A1 (no sh*t) but like many of the lads have said the A2 is a vast improvement.
That said, although the standard site on the F88A1 is rubbish (replaced by the Wildcat I think for some) it has some great ergonimic features, which was pretty unique given that the weapon was designed in the 1970s:
- See through magazine - for a quick visual on how many rounds are left
- Safety Catch - very simple to operate (agree with some of the previous posts though about Safety)
- Two trigger pressures - Semi-Auto and Full Auto - so no need to adjust any Fire Selector
- Left Hand Firers - can be simply changed by an armourer to accomodate Lefties

There is quite a thread about the Steyr on the Irish Military Online site. Some on there are saying they want a replacement, some that it's OK. It's been going since 2007!
A site populated by walts and fantasists - but if you've time on your hands and want to read the regurgitated opinions of underemployed reserists, then you've found the right place!

A bit like here then?
Just thought it might be of interest as they actually use the weapon in question.
I suppose they'll say his last thoughts were of simple things, Of April back at home, and the late sun on his wings; Or that he murmured someone else's name, As earth reclaimed him sheathed in flame. Oh God! Let's have no more of empty words, Lip service ornamenting death! The worms don't spare the hero; Nor can children feed upon resounding praises of his deed. 'He died who loved to live,' they'll say, 'Unselfishly so we might have today!' Like hell! He fought because he had to fight; He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

Did a March and Shoot against Kiwis Mil a few years ago. They had AUGs and Minimis, we had A1s and LSWs.
Won, but had complaints from the Kiwis that the "telescopic" sight (i.e. The SUSAT) made it an unfair match.
IIRC their sight was x1.5 and had still had the round reticule (not sure how as the aussies had gone for cross hairs in their locally produced versions), so the SUSAT's x4 did give a bit of an edge
The major didn't think of his superiors as fools, of course, since it would follow that everyone who obeyed them was a fool. He used the term 'unwise', and felt worried when he used it.

Other way around I believe.
Parts of the Oz army asked for crosshairs to be placed in the circle but were overruled by people far more clever than them - ie those that won't have to use the wpn.
When the Kiwis had the rifle foisted on them, still produced at Lithgow, they magically received exactly what they wanted in the way of reticle - crosshairs within a circle.
Apparently some moderators take themselves very, very seriously, and cannot abide posts such as:
"If however you offer to moderate you may be a sanctimonious, unfunny pissflap to your heart's content."

Not everybody who posts there is a reservist. There are a minority of us who post there who are professional soldiers of all ranks. Most of us fulltimers who post there do so to correct and inform the aforementioned underused reservists and to weed out the walts. :D Oh and BTW we also have a few of her majestys finest posting there too
