    Days Out in London

Sorry to ask more questions to the wise but its the o/h's birthday coming up and we have settled on a day or two in London. Been a funny year so would be good if it was fun. Have got it wrong a few times, right a few times. Want to get itright this time.
Any recommednations outside of the usual? Two days - first day kind of sorted now.

Booked Blue Elephant thai Fulham Broadway, probably a Kensington hotel via hotels.com or lastminute.com with some Kings Rd shopping etc for her - pub for me, and was hoping for tea at ritz the next day but fully booked.

    any other good ideas?

Places to drink in Fulham and Kings Road?

Celebrity restaurant stuff - tried that before, not at all keen
Vinopolis - brilliant but did that last year
Shows - I hate them but thought 39 Steps was very good - still an option
Eye - done - not bad
Galleries - recently went to Courthold Institute - enjoyed it (chavs on security tho!)

Rail companies do a 2 for 1 booklet I might have a look at that again.

Is there anything really fun to do? Or shall I just get a decent room and get her to bring the nurse's outfit?

    Thanks.

    Re: Days Out in London

Drinkies at the Admiral Codrington near Sloane Square or the Grenadier, Wilton Crescent, up near Belgrave Square - best pub in London and the food's pretty good too.

Dinner - Giovanni's Italian restaurant on New Row, between Covent Garden and leicester Square. Proper Italian food and Pino does a good pre-theatre menu. Bear in mind it's proper Italian so 3 courses. Its a bit more expensive than some places but the food is fantastic. Booking advisable 0207 240 2877 (and no I don't own it or get commission). There's also Burelesque supper club. I've never tried it so if you do, let me know

Rooms - phone up the bigger hotels and try negotiating, its sometimes better than the websites. The Jolly Hotel St Ermins round the back of St James' tube is pretty good and they will do a decent rate if you ask. If in doubt ask for the best rate they do for a Big And Expensive defence company. Hotels never question your entitlement and if they ever do tell them you're in town for meeting with them and they told you to ask.

Brigadier Bill Aldridge, commander of British forces in the South Atlantic, responded by saying: ‘I am not expecting to hand the islands over to anybody and therefore put us in a position to have to retake the islands.’

All the big hotels offer afternoon tea (Google for "afternoon tea London"). But you could also try Liberty and Fortnum after giving your plastic a good spanking on Oxford St!!

A good show is Phantom although I suspect that you might have problems buying tickets.

I shall have a look at all of those recommendations thank you.
This might be a useful thread for lots of people. London can be alot of fun if you get it right, not so fun if you don't!

Try the Saturday matinee of Jersey Boys.

Then slap up dining at Axis at One, Aldwych - no rushing to get to the theatre!

Stop for a couple of drinks in the Coal hole on the Strand.

    Then the nurses uniform.

Sunday morning breakfast at the Wolseley on Piccadilly, expensive but very very classy.

    Edited for yalexdis.

Might add for my situation the two days have to be a Sunday & Monday. sorry didn't expect to get specific info.

Did you know that Maxwell's in Cov Gdn is half price on Monday? Not sure we'll go this time but a while back we had loads of cocktails there and some food.

If you're looking for a day time scare then the London Dungeon is worth a visit. Been years since I was there but Junior Oldmuso visited last year and said it was even better than before. Plus if you have an MOD90 you get in free (or you did last year).

Use www.laterooms.com for hotel bookings - normally over 50% cheaper than if you went straight to the hotel.

Builders Arms on Britten Street off the Kings road does top class scoff too.

If you don't mind a bit of a trip east, the Greenwich Observatory at the prime meridian with the planetarium is very interesting. Equally, if you've not been to the British Museum or British Library in a while that's interesting too.

    Re: Days Out in London

Mrs Jagman and myself did a few days in London between Chritmas and New Year.
Took lots of advice on here on places to visit and thoroughly enjoyed it

Things that particularly stood out were Nelson's uniform jacket in the Maritime Museum complete with fatal hole, the Crown Jewels (get in early when we came out the que was about an hour) and the Napoleonic Eagle in the Fusiliers Museum at the Tower and HMS Belfast.
RAF Hendon was pretty stunning too. Depends what you are wanting to see I guess

If you are going to Greenwich it is easy to get to on Jubilee Line (or by boat) and there's a lot to see there and some nice pubs/restaurants if you need to rest the feet
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, camel blue in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOW!!! WHAT A RIDE !!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: Days Out in London

To treat the Missus, I'd recommend a visit to the London Silver Vaults, off Chancery Lane. Lots of craftsmen making stuff, and selling it there and then, as well as loads of dealers, all in a huge Vault behind a bloody great safe door. Interesting to visit, impressive, and you can let her buy something as well if you want.

For afternoon Tea, Claridges is nice - a very good selection of Teas, with fizz if you want, to gether with dainty sandwiches (sans crusts, etc) and truly scrumptious cakes, all while the pianist and fiddler give it welly in the corner. It's handy for Bond Street too.

Pubs - the Porterhouse in Maiden Lane for good Stout. The Nell Gwynn ust off the Strand is dingy, noisy, cramped, but great pub. It also has the most dnagerous toilet staircase outside of Brecon!

Food - Rules, expensive, but very good grub. Salieri, off Drury Lane, nice food, turkish/greek/brit type stuff, all in a very exotic environment. Don't forget to visit the toilets - there are positions painted on the walls there that are physically impossible, if you ask me. And the walls of th eGents are worse!

Agreed. You can get the City Clippers from Westminster Wharf, and enjoy the river (if the weather's good)

Greenwich has a lot to offer, as mentioned above.
