    3 week 'travel' holiday/adventure...recommendations?

I know this is a bit selfish to discuss when there are people in dire situations but...

I am due for some kind long term leave if I can swing it. I was hoping for about 3 weeks. Any more might be tricky.

I am just looking for any recommendations ...I am quite well travelled and can 'survive' so not looking necessarily for plush hotels all the time. The other half will probably come along for a week so one week will need to be relatively 'safe' and nice hotels etc.
Want to be able to hike a bit, and just bimble about. Few bars etc.

Probably not Europe. Love alot of it but not as cheap as it used to be. (For various reasons am not keen on Croatia etc anyway.)

Organised a trip to N Africa years ago was interesting but the hawking bit gets annoying.

Asia- India is interesting but looks such a mess in the cities. Been to Thailand that and Vietnam is interesting (I speako Frencho also may be handy in some areas still.)

South America might be an idea.

Any ideas? Cheap as possible really.

My son, ex rock ape is, currently in S. America and spent some time in Argentina, which he rates as quite good. Buenos Aires is good with some reasonably priced hotels & good, cheap food & wine! He also went to Patagonia both on the Argie side & the Chilean side which he said was Brilliant for yomping with great scenery, lakes, mountains, glaciers etc! He also spent some time riding on a ranch in the north of the country, where the owner, ex Argie forces, had a huge collection of working weapons! Mind you they are still claiming to have rights to "Los Malvinas" & there are still minefields on the Border with Chile! So a low profile on the military connection is advised!

Somalia. BA to Nairobbery and get the Nairobbery flying club to take you in a Cesna twin via Djibutti to Hargeysa in Northern Somaliland. Once there, chill out in the sun. There's fuck all else to do. Oh and the local militia will fire 20mm / 105mm etc over your house/hotel. They think of it as fun. Enjoy! Hope you like goat.

I'm in pretty much the same position as Mr Deputy here with about 21 days to burn later in the year.

So if anyone has any suggestions - even just the companies/agents they used it would be great. I have tried google but it just seems to be throwing up loads of shite which is taking ages to wade thru.

    Cheers in advance

South Africa. Fly to the Cape with Mrs_D for a week touring the wineries, Table Mountain, visiting the cape itself, Robben Island etc. You can the head out along the garden route with some good stops along the way.

The Brass Bell in Kalk Bay for great seafood, Hermanus for whale watching (in season), some great national parks or a safari.

Flights aren't cheap but food, booze and B&Bs are.

If French isn't a problem I'd recommend Burundi, Rwanda and Dem. Rep. Congo. The Nyiragongo vulcano is a good hike and it's well worth camping on/near the summit. Visit the gorilla's (no waiting list in Congo) and chill out on the beach of lake Tanganyika with the mrs.

I use Exodus for all my adventure travel type holidays. They have a mixture of trips from 1 week up to multi-month trips. I have done 5 trips with them, all great, will use them again for this years travel.

I did this trip from Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and S Africa back in 2001, though try and do it north to south if given an option when you book.

They are group tours, however everybody else will be of a similar ilk to you. Your missus can join you at the end, though it sounds like she may not go for the more "interesting" bits of the trip. They also do 'family' versions of the trips which may be more suitable for your missus.

Central America's worth a shot. Far less European in feel than a lot of South America, easy to get off the beaten track, small enough to cover a lot different ground in 3 weeks, wonderful Mayan architecture and and easy to step back and forth between areas that are totally safe and the kind of places where gunshots go off in the street. Plus lots of gucci stamps in your passport and the right to say 'nicawahwah' because you've been there!
