    Dusseldorf - any info/advice?

    Dear all

Am working in Dusseldorf next week with a small team of staff - any tips on places to go in terms of :

    decent (no strippers) eating places
    brilliant pubs/cellars
    the best 'irish' bar
plus any rough-arrsed bars/strip joints etc

plus - long shot but any info on Neuss at all - small town to s/west

have been to D'dorf before but not to centre v much - stayed out of town in Mettman. (there is a swinging place there ...I didnt believe and was taken ...now I believe. I didnt go in - we saw man in leather pants at door. I understood for a small fee we could have sex with the locals and "zum lights snacks unt refreshments." :o back to the hotel bar - we just stuck to drinking til the wee hours and playing dares etc

    thanks alot!

Do the Altstadt, it's gleaming, bars and restaurants galore.

Edited for being too slow off the mark

the bloody agency (call centre) fcked up the hotel booking for our fairly central hotel - so now am stuck out in Neuss. Re-organised today - town is chocker full. so Neuss it is. Its about 3km s west of centre. There is a bus and a tram into town or something, I have a big US people carrier for the week I'll be driving there - will prob just have to be the bus service all week. ding ding.

Big people carrier? You forced to become some kind of bus-driver?

    I would be outraged!

    My advice..........hitchhikers.
Timing is everything. If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. If you're late, you're fucked.

Dumb question, but have you driven in Germany before? They have a few laws that are specific to here.

have passed thru 'outrage' into 'resigned to one's fate' ....it did take a long walk around the village green to simmer down a little.

now what on earth would i do with a small bus load of hitch-hikers in Dusseldorf eh? Surely it will involve some kind of sordid acts and then another bl00dy long drive out to some very remote woodland and back via a carwash which stays open v late? on the plus side i might find some buried Nazi gold or valuable Neanderthal remains out there in the woods.

Quite a few times with current civ job without any probs. Done some really long drives right thru country up and down (and thru - going to Denmark/Svedin etc) and no probs.
Plus I did do my truck driving course and a trip to Poland involved learning German signs and recall some laws. I know ausfhart is not a really, really big city. I know the no speed limit is almost a myth now. I'll be pretty steady as have a big load (fnar)
I'll check the tyres when I get the vehicle here in uk on thurs - I know the bosche are hot on that (3 - 4 mm depth) and its getting into winter as well... mine are ok as I'll be taking my own car there later in the year and have checked them/renewed one.

Dont forget the "Swine Botchen" (spelling) from the little outlets on the Altstadt, awesome!

Louisiana's is a good bar to visit and the smaller Irish bar which was down by the theatre was always good too, had Sky Sports from what I remember.

They've done a lot of 'simplification' of signs; especially built up area speeds. They tend to be 50kph and only signed to 30kph, with a distance indicator, i.e. 30kph 300m. There are no signs to say it's ended, so watch out. Park in direction of travel is another one.

    Have fun :D

There's a really good fish restaurant in the Altstadt called 'Fisch Haus' - owned by an Italian and a Spaniard. They were up all night thinking up the name - but the scoff is first class.

Take the 704/709 Tram into Duesseldorf from Neuss(see vrr.de) or train (see bahn.de). Main going out areas are the Altstadt mentioned above or the Medienhafen, the latter is good for food and bars plus there are a few discos there. There is a place called Mongos in the Medienhafen which is a Mongolian restaurant where you can eat all you want for 20 Euros, they usually have around 12 kind of meat(pork, steak, ostrich, chicken to more exotic antelope and even zebra)plus around 10 kinds of fish plus shellfish, you'll need to book www.mongos.de. The Medienhafen and the Altstadt are about 1 kilometer apart.

If you want Japanese food there are a lot of places around where the Ost Strasse and Immermanstrasse meet. The Schloesser Alt brewery restaurant is on the Ost Strasse, the Uerige Alt restaurant/brewery is in the Altstadt.

The area of the Altstadt that the Duesseldorfers go out in, borders on the Ratinger Strasse, there are good restaurants and bars there, some of which brew their own beer.

There are around 5 Irish bars in the Altstadt and they are easy enough to find.I don't think it matters which one you go into, they all seem the same.

There is nothing around the main station area so you will have to get into the Altstadt from there if you choose to travel in by train.

In all areas of the city there are a large variety of bars and places to eat but if you stick to the Altstadt and Medienhafen you have everything within walking distance.
