A quick shufty at Spoiltb's guide above prompts me to include the following (all subject to the IIRC caveat): Brauerei Im Goldenen Ring, on Burgplatz, and Brauerei Zum Schiffchen nearby. They're both at the north end of the Altstadt, not far from the river, and everything you could want from an über-traditional centuries-old German eatery: huge, scrubbed tables (and waitresses), mountains of simple but oh-so-tasty scoff and excellent beer brewed on the premises, all at very reasonable prices. Du lieber Gott, I miss that town!

Democritus reminded me of something - belegtes broetchen. Now these half rolls with stuff on top make really good pub snacks. However CAVEAT EMPTOR - the stuff that looks like raw mince is in fact - raw mince! Not to everyones taste.

I would go to Zur Uel in the Ratinger Strasse if I wanted to eat in the Altstadt. It's a couple of doors away from the Fuechschen at the top of the list.

Zur Uel looks good - typishe kind of place with a good rep and a long history prob try that one out. not look at the list but I'll print all of this out and use the info wisely.
Order Kolsch in D'dorf? Not sure I'd bother even in Koln again! (I would really.)
The best German pils I've ever had was in Mettman just east of D'dorff in small very 'local' bar (colleague I went there with was half German) and it had a really light frothy head and was 'light' to drink but was not a weak pils - ie well made and well looked after. For some reason I've called it Angel Beer ever since - maybe this was just what we nick-named it at the time. We only nipped over there for 2 small beers but ended up having at least 10 I think. The last time I was working in this area some nights we stayed up drinking until about 5am quite often. The family-run hotel used to give us free drinks after a certain time and as much of his scnapps as we wanted (we steered failry clear of it - it came in a glass container of about 20 litres in size in a wooden cradle - terrifying thing - looked like a fuel/air explosive device. )

Main going out areas are the Altstadt mentioned above or the Medienhafen, the latter is good for food and bars plus there are a few discos there. There is a place called Mongos in the Medienhafen which is a Mongolian restaurant where you can eat all you want for 20 Euros, they usually have around 12 kind of meat(pork, steak, ostrich, chicken to more exotic antelope and even zebra)plus around 10 kinds of fish plus shellfish, you'll need to book www.mongos.de. The Medienhafen and the Altstadt are about 1 kilometer apart.

If you want Japanese food there are a lot of places around where the Ost Strasse and Immermanstrasse meet. The Schloesser Alt brewery restaurant is on the Ost Strasse, the Uerige Alt restaurant/brewery is in the Altstadt.

The area of the Altstadt that the Duesseldorfers go out in, borders on the Ratinger Strasse, there are good restaurants and bars there, some of which brew their own beer.

There are around 5 Irish bars in the Altstadt and they are easy enough to find.I don't think it matters which one you go into, they all seem the same.

There is nothing around the main station area so you will have to get into the Altstadt from there if you choose to travel in by train.

In all areas of the city there are a large variety of bars and places to eat but if you stick to the Altstadt and Medienhafen you have everything within walking distance.
my german workmate also recommends mongo,s he says its brilliant. he also says to try the UERIGE ,its a typical german beer haus and try Killepitsch a 42% herb based liquor.

Mettbroetchen with onions - great :D Haven't had one of those in feck me, 20 years
Go Alt all the way mate - better than that Kolsch shoit anyway. And the links to the breweries in the Altstadt look great.

I liked it as well but the combo of onions, beer and digestive tract - the resulting methane has to exist somewhere
