Falkirk is very handy from Edinburgh Airport (24 miles) and could be a good base. Plenty of reasonable hotels and B and B's, good transport links 9rail and road) and as somebody said in a previous post - The Falkirk Wheel. Stirling Castle, Bannockburn and the Wallace Monument are nearby. I would not bother with the Roman Wall as it looks like a pissed up brickies Monday morning effort.

    Re: Scotland in Late October

I know I keep going on about the weather. Come to think about it, I know I keep going on full stop but here's last years weather to maybe help you dress accordingly:

Jan 1-5 Don't know. Still pished after Hogmanay
    Jan 6-24 Cold and dreich
Jan 25 Despite haggis, tatties and neeps and a wee dram (or twelve) it was still dreich
Jan 26 -31 Even colder though slightly less dreich
    Feb Quite a dreich month
Mar Not as dreich as Feb but slightly wetter
    Apr Cold, wet and dreich
May Less cold but still dreich
Jun The sun shone once but mostly dreich
    July Warmer but nevertheless dreich
Aug 1 -12 Much the same as June but no sun
    Aug 13 Summer is here!
    Aug 14-31 Dreich again
    Sep Autumnal and dreich
Oct Mostly dreich and getting colder
Nov A chilly nip to the air and of course dreich particularly on St Andrew's day
Dec The whole month was dreich especially round Christmas
I bought a military watch. It didn't tell me the time, it told me to get my hair cut.

Yes ok so I exaggerated a bit.

Being serious for a second, I thought Ruthven Barracks was worth a visit as unlike Fort George, there was no bugger there.

I got quite a colour on the Isle of Lewis in December but it was only because I'd been spammed to carry in the peat for the fire.

    And we went otter watching.

I'm sure the little buggers were laughing at us.
