I know all about Jankels, see post above.

MOD will not buy japanese, when a British company, and British jobs are at stake, why should they, when I've no doubt we can build better?

Whereas kitting a 'fully kitted' squaddie in or out of the back of a 110 is so easy, isn't it? And last time I heard, those fitted with side-facing seats weren't cleared for carrying troops in the back anyway.

As good as all the current Japanese 4x4's are, they were not built with the military in mind, and as such aren't worth considering, brand new from the ground up,end off!
Design a bespoke vehicle to replace how many vehicles? That is exactly the reason why OUVS has fallen on its arse, and we're left with trying to re-furb 30 year old Defenders.

The point is that the majority of Land Rovers in military service are little more than pickup trucks anyway, lugging kit around training areas and ranges, and ferrying the OC to and from O GPS. Half the time there isn't neough room in the back anyway, which neccesitates the joys of pulling a trailer.

Buy a small number of specialist vehicles for deployment on operations (say enough for 2-3 deployed Bdes), and give everyone else soemthing cheep and cheerful for the relatively mundane peacetime duties.

We can build better but we tend to build best from donor vehicles. The problem is would you spend millions more on junk from a foreign owned company with a small factory here that will probably build them overseas or buy the cheapest you can get away with that meets the spec because we are skint?

    Again I agree,but donor vehicles aren't the answer,that's why we're in this situation now,the Landrover was/is a donor vehicle.

Do as someone suggested, design competition, include end users in the consultation,a basic idea, with modular construction, for different Arms.

Given the design talent this country produces,it shouldn't be too difficult.

Manufactured in this country, providing jobs,if it's any good export it.

Someone on here mentioned the G wagen, that's just what a 3rd generation Landrover should have been,in 79 it was the only small 4x4 with independently lockable differentials, which was it's big selling point,I can tell you now that it would flop over before a Landrover,or Range Rover,on an inclined traverse, and the approach, departure, and cutover angles, were nowhere near as good as the Landrover, still aren't.

None of the commercial 4x4's mentioned are the great panacea required,it's back to the drawing board and come up with something new!

    Is a panacea needed?

Poppycock. The British were once the builders of choice for ships. Now we get them built in South Korea. Why should vehicles be any different?
