One might well ask, why would they want to bother dragging all that lot back to UK ? What for ? Storage a la Green Goddess ?

It`s a bit like the, for Mash get Smash advert, the aliens at the MOD are rolling around laughing at how you used to peel potatoes & boil them !

Think the unthinkable & you might just be awarded that mod prize for technical innovation & problem solving.

Suppose, MOD says we want to cut through all that, here are one or two serious & perhaps not so serious suggestions to travel light in a shorter time frame. It`s the kind of bold, Creative new thinking they want to hear these days.

They are now keeping HMS Cumberland & completely disbanding heavy armour instead.

    1. Give some or all of it away to friends & allies.
    2. Call Fritz the scrappy to come down & give us a cash price to take it all away & immediately reduce the deficit.
    3. Give it all away to Colonel Gaddafi for RAF target practice.
    4. In Germany you usually leave things you do not want out on the pavement for collection, next morning it is usually gone, before the local council arrives.
    5. Load it all up & scuttle it in the North Sea before it reaches UK.

So, keeping it really simple, I do not need funding, real estate & facilities in UK, problem solved before it arises.
Certainly what happened in the original options for change drawdown from BAOR; I outloaded the entire furniture stock from the supply depot in Munster to some outfit in Poland; we even paid for the f'ing transport.

Spot on nothing much has changed from the orignal plans, it will simply take a bit longer to find the suitable future location for the newly combined 7 & 16 Regts.

According to an article in the latest Rheindahlen Bulletin, the closure plans for JHQ are on time. Already more than 40% of all buildings are empty and drained down. The atmosphere is a bit unreal.

It was when we closed Winterbourne Barracks; that closed in Jan 95, I left just prior to that so probably some time in 94.

Don't about the combined part of that statement...other than I would not imagine any combining being done. And the options for future locations in UK are already doing the rounds with intial costings.

But you will notice that nothing has been smashed up, disconnected or demolished. Expect a surprise announcement at the end of June which will hearten shopkeepers and landlords alike.

It is the end of Rheindahlen as we know it, but not the end of Rheindahlen.

When I was there a couple of months ago most of the parade of shops was already tumbleweed town. I do not think the surprise announcement to which you allude will change anything as far as shopkeepers are concerned.

Whatever it is, I expect it will amount to nothing more than the equivalent of keeping the patient on life support for a few days longer to allow the relatives a bit more time to arrange & put back the date of the funeral.

Apparently Nick Harvey was in Paderborn last Tuesday. Officials from towns affected were gathered in anticipation, expecting to hear THE WITHDRAWAL PLAN only to be told there was`nt one yet & there was not now expected to be one to announce before summer 2012.

    No big surprise there then.

The Germans must be rolling their eyes & having a laugh. The Brits boldly announce they are leaving, BY, deadline xy. But it turns out they don`t know HOW, YET. But we will do by March 2011 or, rather later, summer 2011, but seeing as how, frankly, we`ve still not got a clue, hopefully we`ll have our facts & story straight by summer 2012 !

Sensible people figure out what they are going to do & how first. Husband suddenly tells wife, I`m leaving you, yeah right, HOW.
