Ohhh God - the straining involved avoiding making the obvious joke is killing me.

Oh, I'm going to get flack for this, but WFT. I admit I don't watch football, and care about it even less, but …

So the BBC claims that 23m people watched that football game. Hmmm. Really?
UK population c. 62m. So 37% watched the game? Hmmm again.

Apparently 18% [10.5m] are under 14 and 16% [9.5m] are over 65. I'll accept that maybe 33% of those actually give a damn, despite their age, or are sucking on their blanket in a crib. So I'll add 6m there.

Then the dreaded ethnicity question. Some 4m are decidedly non-British. Like they give a damn?

    Clatter of calculator ….
    62m - 4m foreign = 58m
    58m - 20m/3 who are too young or too old = c. 50m.
50m x .5 as not that many women actually care about footy = 25m

Is that how the BBC decided that 23m watched a football match I didn't watch? Or is there some secret Government department deciding who gives a tinker's cuss about football, and then massaging the statistics to say if you're male, of a certain age, you must have watched 22 men kick a ball around?

It was mostly 11 Italians kicking a ball about, while 11 others watched them and wept. The opposite of El Alamein, really.

I'm not whinging. I think it's funny watching England being humiliated like this.

I'm not a Scouser either, mind.

I'm with you BS but I made the effort and watched the game last night. I have to admit the wendy ball skills on display were top drawer. The drag-back by the shirt, the grabbing of the face when accidentally kicked on the shoulder.... the list is endless.

But there's no way a team with eight league and four Champions League winners and with all eleven of their starting eleven with Champions League experience could possibly have dreamed of doing better...

I have to admit Woy is a genius in one respect - he can't half drag expectations down.
8 League Champions eh? I had no idea he'd picked so many non Liverpool players. Only one of which played Champions league to any extent.

As for all the stuff about League winners, Runners Up Cup winners etc. Do you think its any different for the other countries?

Its England v the best teams in Europe, not England v Monkeys

England did as well as you should reasonably expect. Think of them as akin to the shite has beens just below the top 4 in the Premiership

If you say so. I'm just looking forward to Hodge Podge's World Cup qualifying campaign now. Montenegro, Ukraine, Poland, Moldova and San Marino - it's going to be fucking brilliant.

I reckon the 0-0 away in San Marino is when the press and fans will turn on him.
