Mapping and GPS on the web
Thought I would start a thread on mapping resources of available on the web, outside the mil system and available to all, some free, some paid for, to support outdoor training or leisure walking, general navigation studies and other uses. I did something similar in the computer and gaming thread but that was probably the wrong place :D
Where’s the path
Very impressive mashup that links Google Maps and the Ordnance Survey mapping data to display the OS map in one pane and a Google map on the other. Also includes a number of useful tools like grid display, place finders, out of copyright 1940’s maps, Wiki geotagged images, Google Earth overlays and route planning. The route planning features are very impressive allowing export of way points, distance measurement etc.

Fantastic post. I've just spent 4 hours doing route maps for a JSATFA and I have gone x eyed. This is a great thread and I'm now going to use the Anquet to check my routes.

Re: Mapping and GPS on the web
Good thread Meridian.
I've recently started using QUO The base map and software are free from the link and you can download the latest individual 1:50,000 OS maps for 99p each (£1.99 for 1:25,000) You download them as tiles; each tile being the equivelant OS map.
The software is good including 3D image generation etc, a word of warning though the free version only allows you set, upload and download up to 10 waypoints, you will need to upgrade to the pro version for about £25 to get unlimited waypoints and access their database of routes.

Re: Mapping and GPS on the web
Came across this
The Google Map Buddy
This tool allows you to do the following:
Capture your Google Maps offline and store them as images on your hard drive
Print out maps of entire cities at zoom levels that would take hours to put together with the current Google facility
Best of all, this tool is completely FREE!
If you have ever spent hours print screening your Google maps into Paint and stitching them together you NEED this program!

Re: Mapping and GPS on the web
I'd missed this thread completely. It's brilliant, many many thanks for this.
Coincidentally I have just got a new cellphone Nokia 5800 and have found it has GPS and moving maps on it as standard. The maps could be better but are ok for road work.
ViewRanger offer OS mapping for this and other phones.

To bring this back into the sports realm - www.mapmyrun.com
Brilliant - it saved me about £200 on buying a Garmin runners watch.
Well worth the visit
