Since the antique firearms thread seem to wonder into this territory I thought I would encourage such discussion in its very own topic :D

Good idea, Having sold most of my military rifles I shall sit back but only after listing them;

.303 SMLE V (Yes a Mk smellie not a No 5 Carbine)
.303 P14 ERA
7.5 French Mas Mlle 1936 ( a great rifle capable of astounding accuraccy)
0.22rf No8 (a Woolwich receiver)
.22rf Greener conversion of a Mk1 Martini 1874 itself converted to a Mk2.
Add these to the list of pistols I have sold as section 7;
.455 Colt New Service
.455 Webley MkV1
.32 Colt 1903
.25 webley Pocket still in its box.
9mm Steyr 1911.
These were all sold to fund stalking rifles. My FAC gets larger not smaller.

I notice you MAS36 wasn't refurbished with the rifle grenade barrel extension and sight, strange for a 60s refurb.

Standard Rifle put into storage after refurb, it was immaculate but I had to fire it, even had hidden proof stamps below the barrel.
£150 cash at Gwynnedd Firearms and they sent it away for proof as well at that price.

There is a conversion kit but I've yet to see one working!

What do you call astounding accuracy?

I have a Garand which is capable of 1.5 inches at 100 mtrs, when I get my act together. I also have an ex RAF Browning Hi-Power (date stamped 196 which has been slightly tuned by the addtion of a Bar Sto barrel.

I fancy aquiring a Swiss bolt action rifle in 7.5, (can't remember the exact designation), the rifles are cheap here, but the spindle diopter sight can cost more than the rifle! Reloading can also be a problem as 7.5 bullets are rarer than rocking horse sh*t, however Swiss surplus ammo was at least until recently relatively cheap and accurate.

I call it as capable of hitting a fig 12 prone at 400 yards 10 out of 10 times. Not me another chap I was reading the chrono.
I found it to be more accurate than .303 at least as far as 400 yards and better than 7.62 in a similar platform.

I think the Swiss ones you are on about are the K31 rifles which were an improvement over the earlier ones which fired the GP11 ammo?
There is only one Swiss rifle I would buy;

They are reasonably rare due to the fact that the Swiss didnt issue many to its cavalry and they didnt like it and allegedly tried to break as many as possible. I think its chambered for the obsolete cartridge as well.

Whilst I'd agree that is a reasonable practical standard to aspire to it's not exactly special. Have I misunderstood the point?

No but its a damn fine rifle and despite all the shooting I did with it I never measured groups, that would be more a measure of me to be honest, I did though get placed 3rd and 4th a few times in open matches. beyond 400 yards though the difference in metres and yards started to have an effect. Its a metric sight and even though there seems to be no adjustment it shot very well. I bought it as I was interested in reviving the cartridge.
I will be loading it in a sporting soft point load.
I was impressed with the rifles simplicity, strength and the way that it felt when I fired it. I found that without changing the rear sight aperture with a needle file I had to get close to my right thumb with my cheek to get that spot of light sight picture, I could have fiddled with it but it was in too good a nick to do that! The MAS36 was a simple un fiddly battle rifle of its time and had the french had more time it would have served them well.
I see it as the final development of unfussy rifles no mag cut offs, no volley sights, no safety in fact!
