Best safety location on a bolt-action is the P14/M17. None really have a satisfactory butt shape -the cheek comb is universally too low. The first military rifle to have a "good" stock shape IMHO is probably the M1 Garand.
I find this works quite well:

    It's time for British Independence.

I'll have to be honest here and say the bugger hasn't.
He owns some of the ugliest rifles I've ever seen and hits well with them.

His idea of ally (and aesthetic) is a nicely worn No 4.
Apparently some moderators take themselves very, very seriously, and cannot abide posts such as:

Some comments are allegedly "very very nasty and uncalled for."

I have fundamental objections to safeties in trigger guards, for I think self evident reasons. Encouragesfingers to be where they shouldn't be when they shouldn't be. And presumably that one can't be applied without putting digits in the guard?

Saves several seconds. If several seconds count, you can lose the empty mag or pick it up after the "problem" has been dealt with.
Although I see your point, couldn't you just drop the L85 mag and move straight to grabbing another one if you really needed to? I have to admit I've never tried it but that's because the drill's always been 'remove mag and put it somewhere (pouch/front of smock)' and I've never been in a situation where the drill has changed to 'fuck me those natives are getting close, see how fast you can get your rounds off'. If you just press the magazine release won't the magazine just drop out onto the floor?

It would probably still be slightly longer than being able to drop the mag without moving a hand but I doubt we're talking about enough of a difference to be noticeable.

le frog 36 admittedly you had to get close to the rear aperture to get a good sight picture and you would get a little bruised cheek but it was definetly accurate and the bolt was ergonomic if you palmed it shut!
