19-07-2011, 21:05 #62If you are able,
save them a place
inside of you
and save one backward glance
when you are leaving
for the places they can
no longer go.
Be not ashamed to say
you loved them,
though you may
or may not have always.
Take what they have left
and what they have taught you
with their dying
and keep it with your own.
And in that time
when men decide and feel safe
to call the war insane,
take one moment to embrace
those gentle heroes
you left behind.

Never heard of a Staff Sergeant Major RLC . Can any one provide information.
Our King is answerable to God for us. I fight for him. My religion consists in a firelock, open touch-hole, good flint,well-rammed charge, and seventy rounds of powder and ball. This is the military creed, comrades, drink success to British arms.
Sergeant Samuel Ancell . 58th Regiment.

Is this shit still going on?
RLC conductor is the most senior non-commissioned rank (who holds a warrant - to avoid the pedants amongst you).
Those of you who confuse this appointment with the senior RSM in the army clearly don't understand that an RLC WO1 (Cdr) is not a WO1 (RSM). In the same vein I have always seen a WO2 (SSM) act as the RSM rather than the WO1 (ASM) from any unit Wksp.
The GSM may well be the defacto PMC of the SNCO&WOs' Mess but that can be down to the fact that a WO1 (Cdr) is an honorary member of the SNCO&WOs' Mess.I could match my wage in civvy street but then I'd have to do some work!

I was for a while GSM Belize garrison and indeed felt quite senior; that was until the RAF posted in a Grounded 'by injuries' wartime sgt pilot. He had a limp from being shot down in the North Sea, His present job was to Liase with 'them' and their air requirements. It was 1977 and he was I think about 56 years of age. On arrival he came to see me and informed 'told' me what he would be doing in the way of duties and or parades; such was his manner that I 'listened in.'
Seniorority can certainly be brought about by manner and presence as well as rank.

Most senior NCO
It used to be a Conductor RAOC, (would have been an Ammunition Technician), but that was way back in the 70's may have changed now.
