Discuss Are you religious? in The Science Forum on The Army Rumour Service; fair point. Put another way then - I don't want my kids to be discriminated against because I am an atheist. It's immoral and illegal....

I agree with what you say in that they should take their talents and try to use them for good but I think the last thing people on the streets of Calcutta or the refugee camps of Darfur need is prattling priests.
The Cannibals in Papua New Guinea, Liverpool or Scotland might find them useful.

Often the parents don't see the point of education, they don't support the school they permit unauthorised absence. In addition they have no cultural capital, they don't have books they don't take their kids out, they don't teach them moral and social values. It's not the fault of the kids but I don't see an answer to it.
You seem to be counting the gits that CHOOSE not to work as working class. That drives me mad.

I am working class. I have books. I value education etc.

I'd like to be able to send my kids to one if I wanted to, particularly as I pay for them. But I can't because I don't have a note from the vicar or priest stating that I regulalry attend church. In which case I would like a rebate on my tax please..............
I understand. But it is still true that on average church schools do better than state. Until that changes, keep church schools. At least some kids get a decent education.

So am I but we're in the minority ! I have niece who's 19 who is illiterate, has a baby, has never worked. She tried shop work once but didn't like being on her feet all day ! She gets benefits and has rejected several council flats because they weren't good enough. So I know what I'm talking about. People who value education know it can be route off a dead end council estate and into a better job. Personally, I think the whole benefit system needs a shake up and people should have to work. Trouble is when Maggie tried it the work they did was crap LOL Tattybadger started this one, I don't know what his solution is ? You know I've even come across five year olds in some parts of London who're not toilet trained and can't use a knife and fork it's that bad.

Well, she's certainly not upper class -though they're probably just as idle.

    Delete church, insert grammar.
    Delete state, insert academy.
