    He came in very handy when the "Invicta" badges kept dropping off the Barford kit.
    I think theDog Shaggers still have blacksmiths/farriers. A mate of mine from basic was a handler, and I ran into him in STC a few years later where he took me to meet his mates up the staffy arms. One of the guys was whinging that he'd got show parade show anvil removed from room. Whether he showed his bunk without an anvil in it, or turned up at the guard room carrying the fucker to show it removed, I never found out.

    Possibly REME (or even RCT), but Loco Fitter (Steam) and Loco Fitter (Diesel)?

    As recently as early 1970's?

    *misty eyes*

    Ahhhhhhhhhhh sweeping.
    It was mostly the plant park or hanger though.

    I only ever had one broom. It had 4 new heads and 3 new handles in its time.

    Up to 1965 these were RE's/REME jobs.

    In 1965, The RCT took control of the Military Railway Operating Trades from the RE's i.e. Locomotive Driver (Steam and Diesel), Shunter, Blockman etc.

    I was a third generation Military Railwayman;

    Grandfather, (WW2 onwards), (Driver steam, and steam fitter) badged RE.

    Father, (National Service 1957 to 1960), (Driver steam and Blockman), badged RE.

    Me, 79 Railway Squadron RCT 1978 to 1986, (all Military Railway Operating Trades), badged RCT.

    The Military Railwaymen at 79 Railway squadron RCT were 'A' trades, the REME VM's fixing the diesel loco's were 'B' trades.

    The squadron had a least one steam fitter, Sgt Bin REME up to about 1980.

    Movement light - at least one TA squadron had the role of illuminating the battefield, up until pretty recently.

    You and me both, I still have the mental image of him trying to get from one side of STC to the other in his 2's, sweating like a paedo in a clown suit, carrying it just to show that it wasn't in his bunk anymore.

    Then getting another show parade for being in tramp order
