- 01-09-2010, 10:10 #52We trained hard - but it seemed every time we were beginning to form up into teams we were reorganised.
I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganising, and what a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while actually producing confusion, inefficiency and demoralisation.

68B Marine Engineer.Anyone remember getting back from trade on a friday afternoon and on the notice board. '1800,Full packs and weapons, muster on square and walk to Monmouth battle camp.' Remember crossing the derelict railway bridge up the track by torchlight!Got to the camp over the swinging bridge in time to get bread crusts, cold tea and dodgy curry, happy days my arse!!!
Only the depth varies.

I had a drink for the same reason on Friday night. 24 years since I nearly buckled under the weight of all my bags plus everything I'd been issued, carrying them from the QMs to the block. I only managed 10 years in, but I'll be a Sapper and a Beachley Old Boy forever.

85C Marine Engineer.
Remember Tom Brady waking us up on the TSC to go for a run at 2 in the morning. He'd had a barney with the barman in the mess and wanted to prove how fit we were. Sure enough said barman was puking his ring up after a little while. Really pi**ed off at the time but funny looking back!

Snap , Mr bridgin . I too was in 76c ( POM)."Uncle" Sam Cowdrey's mate from downstairs was Mick Hall . I can remember the "swordfight" on the square as well ,didn't the pair of them get caught by Scoffer farting about on HIS square and ended up doing Ord Sgt for about a month . You'll also remember the late Bean Foster who was killed on his motorbike in 1977. Iwas clearing out my loft just last week and found the 1a platoon photo that was taken just a few weeks after we all joined up .Christ didn't we all look young .Happy days indeed.
