Discuss Ex Braveheart circa 1980 in Royal Signals on The Army Rumour Service; ^ Lionheart '84 - the clue was in the exercise name! Was my first experience of BAOR. There wasn't one quite as big as that ever again, though the Yanks did pull off a Reforger ...

Took part in Lionheart, late Sept/early Oct 84. Flew out to Guttersloh in a VC10, with the aim of reinforcing BAOR. Not just me you understand, was in a TA Gunner Battery. As an OP my part consisted of laying up in a hole and not moving for 8 days, which I gather was not uncommon! Had 48 hours off in Hamburg, and then back on a civvy ferry to Harwich. Good memories.

Crusader '80, we were enemy forces living under canvas in two feet of mud near Hessheldendorf, wired place, had an old Dakota aircraft as a restaurant. Had plenty of laughs in the TA naafi tent though.
Me lucky? If I fell in a barrel of tits I'd come out sucking my thumb!

^ What was the reaction of the neighbours when the big NATO FTXs were taking place? I know they got a bit excited during one of the CPXs in the 80s (can't recall the name of it though), so I would thing they got well twitchy when the whole of Northag was playing out.

Sent from my iPhone using ARRSE so I should probably be working....

Spent Crusader 80 with 32AER. We had Blue, Orange and White Marker boards depending on what stage of the exercise it was.
Seem to recall spending a lot of the time around the Mitland Canal and a quarry near Marienhagen.
Did Lionheart 84 with 3 RTR, and remeber the whole of C Sqn getting wiped out. Chased a couple of Leopards over the hill, only to be confronted with a whole Regt. Still got 24 hours off and so caought up on sleeping and eating.
Happy days driving around Germany without a care in the world.

Rather happily we dodged Crusader leaving our pals in 3 Did to stag on while we were in NI. We even got a Crusader evader t shirts, mine is long gone nicked by some pikey.
