    Yes, emintley sensible....but!

Buying a modern state if the art fighter for the RAF would show up their vast Typhoon fleet of hugely expensive too late for the cold war fitted for but not with everything cold war warriors for what they are.

There are vested interests at the top of the RAF who will stop at nothing to protect their Typhoon progeny.

Instead of buying another new fighter for the RAF, why not just spend the money on putting all the bells and whistles that Typhoon is supposed to have into Typhoon and make it as good as it should be then buy something else for the RN to fly off their carriers?

Because no matter how many go faster stripes you put on Typhoon, it's an ancient design that F-35 will show up very dramatically.

Ask yourself this if you were head Crab.

Would you want the Fleet Air Arm to have a force of 5th Gen fighters that could completely sweep your entire last centuries model air force from the skies without fuss?

The sensible option would be to relegate Typhoon to CAS and such mundane tasks and the RAF adopt the F-35A as their cutting edge fighter, but as I've pointed out, the RAF have invested enormous institutional baggage in Typhhon and will let nothing threaten it.

That would mean RAF having to lay off their existing typhoons and adopt the tranche three... did the RAF not lay off tranche 3 to Saudi Arabia?

There has been no sign of any joined up writing in RAF procurement for well over 30 years, why should things change now?

Is Typhoon really that bad? Even if it had all the bells and whistles welded on?

30 years, you have a short memory. TSR2, vtol transport, supersonic Harrier, rocket interceptors, 3 v bombers, Swift/Hunter, catapult bombers/ bombers with wings to fit hangers not performance pre ww2 etc etc
Haven't had an accident in years. See a lot in my rear view mirror though.

It's very unlucky to be superstitious.

Dig out the limitless chequebook and years of work, and you'd have a plane that is no more capable than the current F-18E at well over the double the cost.
Tell a Superbug driver the Typhoon is a better plane than his current ride and he'll laugh in your face. It has a slight performance advantage, but for anything other than a dedicated and fairly limited A2A mission, its inferior as it stands.

I was trying to just stick to current memory, but yes, they have a great history of howlers.
I'm sure Russian pilots in their supersonic MIG 19's with their 23k ft/min would have burst out laughing of they'd gone face to face with the mighty Javelin interceptor and it's 5k/min climb rate.!

Missed that performance - what made her so uncomfortable?
