being enviro sealed tubes that cant be miss packed with junk there just empty tubes, the weight saving/loading time saving /cheaper fuel requirement probably had more to do with why they wernt carried than anything else, that and the lack of available supplies in the stores on hand (Gib) let be totally honest here, those tubs normally float about empty apart from some cheap gear they might actually need like star bursts, the whole concept of just in time supply is that you notice and requesition the items required when there needed and they get delivered just a few weeks later, its a concept that never has worked and never will work with mission critical spares, its a cost saving exersize that will only be proved as stupid when following it finally results in a catastorphic loss (loosing a really expensive tub might be just the thing to proove the case) it might sound crass but i rather suspect the force gen area of the navy is atempting to force the issue on every single deployment just to prove the whole stupid idea is bollox, and what better way than to be able to point at hmt and claim those peny pinching bastards caused this whole mess.........

Fcuk me stupid. Perce is some armchair Admiral when it comes to slagging down Jack.

Being Perce and members of Arrse you'll all be correct of course, and the story being about Jack they'll all be clueless fcukwits that some REMF Cpl could sort out and tell how to go to war because, well, you know everything about the navy.

I am rather reminded of a little Admiral I once talked to, who said that they were going for short-deck carriers again because electromagnetic catapults were 'untried'. When I suggested that the F-35 VTOL was not only untried but undesigned, unbuilt etc, and might be harder to get right than a simple catapult, he huffed that if only I knew what he knew then I'd know he was right.

I'm still waiting to find out.

    MOD Head on

I am watching the thread closely and will close it if I think OPSEC is going to be breached. A2 and ATG I suspect you know as well as I what happened in the Estimate process to send the ship. I know that you would want to explain that position but with your knowledge you may accidentally give too much away. As may others so please, everyone, consider what you post.

That said I am not sure what else can be said on this subject but am happy to let it run. I ask that everyone be fully aware that opinions here are not official and that this is the internet - everyone in the world can read your posts (they live for ever as well).

    Yours

It came off in me hand chief!

If I had wanted to burn, collect sand in everything I own, overheat, run around, shoot things with something less than 4.5inch caliber, wear green/sand coloured baggy outfits, live more than 16m above Sea Level I would have joined the Army.

There's a false equivalence tucked into some of these arguments. It is one thing to balance a warship's outfit according to the threat/mission when options are mutually exclusive, for instance deciding between Tomahawks or torpedoes for a submarine, when the total number is fixed and the proportion has to be decided. It is quite another to reduce a facility that can only be used for a single purpose, with no compensating advantage.

As it is at least two of the ships used against Ghadaffi thought they were on their way to do something quite different until they were re-tasked - Cumberland on her way home and York on her way to the South Atlantic. While Libya was an optional war (and may yet prove to have been a huge mistake) there is always the possibility of us having quite another adventure thrust upon us. The idea that our Govt can carry on forever picking and choosing where to send the Forces for live firing practice may yet prove to be mistaken.

.....And I've spent more time doing perce's job than I have looking all shiny and new stood to attention beside something that warrants someone shiny and new standing next to it...

Jeez, I must be the only guy on this thread to get pinged for Guard duty at short notice and bimble off into the wide blue yonder with 5 rounds in his pocket.

Guard - couple of hundred metres at most from Guardroom at pretty much all times you're not actually sat in it. Ammunition can be issued out in minutes if the threat level/tasking changes.

Sailing round the Med - few days sailing from the 'Guardroom'. It could be a week until ammunition can be issued out if the threat level/tasking changes.

A slight difference in the two really.
