Danny R was a screw at HMP Winchester, still kicking around the area a few years ago.

Maybe its just me thinking those days were so important.Others may differ but best years of my life,so far, were spent on a raft in the s*** with the best of the crowd. Myself and Tony, slim, were on exercise in the channel with an LCL and weather turned bad and we couldn't side lift in the swell. We were asked lol to stay on the raft long line astern and towed back 120 miles over 6-7 hrs into calmer waters to eventually get picked up. Corn beef sarnies and a flask of tea, before the days of huts and cuddys. That's when you get to know people. Remember the shudder of a mexe in bad weather. Few would believe you. Happy days!
Had a similar experience but much better circumstances. In Bahrain Roads the LSL had to go and Bunker and for some reason the Mexe had to take all the ammo that the Bedevere was carrying and drift around all day. Well sod that says Brian Harris the skipper and alongside a ocean going tug we go begging for water, well several hours a three course meal and many tinnies later we see the Bedevere steaming out to the roads so like all good Mexemen we didn't moan about being abandoned for the day and just got the raft lifted and got our heads down.

Lol two days from Wilmington I had to drill out the remains of the broken Flag Staff with waves going over me whilst clipped onto two safety wires now that was ass clenching. was a rough trip, midships housing front plate was pushed back several inches and I think we lost the stbd anchor, we were battered so much the paint fell off the inside of the fuel tanks which meant we had to clean the fuel filters every half hour or the main engines would have failed, now that would have been scary. LOL
