I seem to remember tem or maybe it was the new piglets being in \derry in 88! I only say that as the lads on Bde reserve wrecked a couple driving into the POL pumps!
Off topic a bit, sorry but did the can have the same engine as the stally? I am pretty certain it did but if any one knows for sure it would be appreciatted
Correct. Rolls Royce B80 petrol straight eight. Saracen, saladin, salamander and stalwart all had the same basic chassis, although in various engine & transmission configurations.
I drove the 6th Operational Saxon to hit the streets of Belfast on Op Banner in March 93. We were the first Sqn to get them. Still prefered Pigs though.........
I seem to remember Sarrie Ambulances in Belfast in 1989/1990, but there again my memory is not what it used to be.
I was in FWR in 1986/1987 - Pig ambulances then (I even have the phots!).
When I arrived in 26 Sqn in early '84 my first job was to withdraw the Saracen SWD from Girdwood Park - allegedly the 'last in NI'. Years later in '91 I did the Saxon Patrol trial...................
Yep, that would be the SWD (special water dispenser) versions used by 321 EOD Coy RAOC (as was). When I get the chance I'll check the old team photos - which should tell when they were last on the teams - within a few months or so.
Memories I played with that one in 1980. Used to pracitce the SWD down by the River Foyle in Fort George.
FWR or jericho as the locals called it for the walls often blew down!
I remember it being called 'Jericho' - I think it was the first, temporary, version that blew down.
You used to get a great view through the CCTV - on a clear day you could see Scotland. At 0100hrs every morning you could also see the girls in the top floor of 16 Dermott Hill Drive stripping off - I often wondered what mayhem PIRA were up to in Turf Lodge and Ballymurphy as they saw all the cameras swivel inexorably in that direction............
When the girls didn't oblige, my Int Sgt would ring them up to remind them of their duty!
