well its clear to me and all the others that Randy_McNob doesnt hav a fcuking clue about what the army has to offer, people who join the infantry dont care about qualifications they join because they want to. Anyway theres chances to gain qualifications in the infantry such as Telecommunications. Randy_McNob get your facts straight u cnut.

Deano.
I'm pretty up to speed on what the Army has to offer.
I think it goes without saying that if you join a corps like the RE or the RLC you will have much more chance to get a better trade than someone who joins the Infantry.
Fair enough, a lot of people join the Infantry because they WANT to, and good luck to them.
However a lot of people join the Infantry because they have very little other option if they want to be in the Army.
A lot of ACIO's also *ahem* 'point' potential recruits in the direction of their own regiments or corps. A mate of mine went to enquire about joining up and the ACIO was an Infantryman. The pressure he put my mate under to join his mob was unreal.

That's bull sh*t when i joined the afco were adamant to point me in the direction that suited my qualifications and potential. They pointed me in the direction of RE electrician. I never looked back.
There probably are a few in the afco that try to fill quotas or favour their own regt/corps but most people tend to think about retention. Put someone in the right job they are more likely to stay. Nothing wrong with the inf but you have to want to do it otherwise one cold night when you are living in a ditch you will think what the feck am i doing here.

Hi Scouseadan. For what it's worth I was in exactly the same spot as you are now in. In 1990 there was a recession, I was 18, I always fancied joining up and had just been booted out of college. It might be helpful also if some others on here got this thread back on track. I joined the cavalry, however the important thing is to go along to the AFCO and join the best option you are presented with. If you fancy the Infantry then make sure you are fit but I'm sure you have already guessed that. One pointer might be to join the TA for a few months first as at least that will give you a taste of army life as well as a few beer tokens. Plus of course once in the Army you can always transfer from one branch to another if something else interests you. All the best.
