JPA termination button is no longer a threat to use to get your RCMO to re cap badge you as many are finding out so who ever join from now have to ensure they make the correct decision when joining and not go for a job they will be bored with. It might sound good to get a trade but none of the new lads or lasses do it because they think after 20* years they will do it in CIV DIV .....I know one thing after 25 years Im not going to be spannering.
Every day a school day; I was totally unaware of this, may explain why so many of the people I recently put forward for Transfers got rejections (and not just the total mongs), thank you for the information.

However I really want to join the infantry and do soldiering at its finest but any time I tell people this they all say something along the lines of "You won't have any skills when you leave!" "But you are too smart! Get a trade!" and I am wondering if there is any weight to these claims?

I've heard on these very forums that you can volunteer for various courses no matter what job you pick and still get some good skills that could be used in civvy street, is this true?

Also why do people always think the infantry are thick cnuts? This can't be true can it?
If you're switched on you'll be able to get a job regardless of whether or not you've got a trade; if you go infantry you can always go to uni and get a degree or something after you come out.

"Getting a trade" is probably an old fashioned way of looking at things. There was a time when getting trade qualifications was a tricky business and a short stint in the Army was a good way to get paid to learn. Nowadays, you can learn just about anything you could in the Army at your local college, for free.

It also depends on what you want from the Army. I joined because I was lacking direction and further education sounded like a pile of wank. I didn't intend to make the Army my career. The infantry suited me because the entry criteria were low, the training was short, and it opened up a lot of opportunities in a short space of time. I got nothing in the way of transferable qualifications, but I did gain an attitude and confidence which has served me very well in civvie life. I'm sure you'd get some of that from a REMF unit, but probably not to the same extent.

Similarly, if you're looking at the Army as a full term career, only a few trades will actually work in your favour by the time you leave. By the time you reach SNCO level, your experience will likely be in command and leadership rather than your particular trade, as per an infantry SNCO.

In short, the infantry isn't a bad choice. My advice would be to do what appeals and not worry too much about the quals you're going to get from it - unless you're planning to do something very specific once you leave.

How come? I'd have thought that was one of the few trades still worth getting through the Army.

Only a total twat would even dream of saying something like that on a forum that is mainly populated by regulars.

I was a regular, and I have an MSc, two BAs [one an Hons] and I'm a MIL.

In all seriousness, the infantry are an indispensible part of the army. While armour can take ground brilliantly, tanks cannot hold ground . This is where the infantry come in. Thick or not
