I picked this job because it's a trade and if I left I would have some transferable skills if/when I left the army.

However I really want to join the infantry and do soldiering at its finest but any time I tell people this they all say something along the lines of "You won't have any skills when you leave!" "But you are too smart! Get a trade!" and I am wondering if there is any weight to these claims?

I've heard on these very forums that you can volunteer for various courses no matter what job you pick and still get some good skills that could be used in civvy street, is this true?

Also why do people always think the infantry are thick cnuts? This can't be true can it?
    Have you met PARA?

    Lobotid on entry... case rests.

Why not join the Infantry and aim for the CIS (Signals) Pl? Best of both worlds, and if it's too demanding/s**t/boring you could always transfer to the R Sigs.

    OP,

Same advice/ponderable matierial as I give for everyone else in your predicament.

    It is YOUR life.

The Armed Forces are not forever, and you can change direction if you wish.

'Getting a trade' is all well and good. But if you don't want that trade, then you may not stick at it, you may not enjoy it. You may not go in to that trade when you leave.

If you don't enjoy it, chances are you'll struggle and wont be as succesful as you could be.

If you wish to go Infantry, go for it. Enjoy it.

You can gather quals in any capbadge... Inf (for example) will give you driving licences, maybe driver instructor or examiner. You can get useful civ quals as well as 'steally eyed dealer of death ones'.

I heard it said that because of the general prestige of the RM and Paras that far more well educated people enlist at soldier level, just for the thrills, than other infantry regiments. And, as is true with all regiments/corps, a few knobs always give the many a bad name. I've known infantry lads who've gone for the AAC pilot's course, transferred to a Corps after a few years in or gone for Commissions - which is not the sign of a group of stupid people is it.

Problem is CC as most of us know from the past people could transfer when bored or wanted a change. With the introduction of the Job Offer letter in April 2010 (follows new soldiers around in their P File) and SDR this will be a thing of the past. JPA termination button is no longer a threat to use to get your RCMO to re cap badge you as many are finding out so who ever join from now have to ensure they make the correct decision when joining and not go for a job they will be bored with. It might sound good to get a trade but none of the new lads or lasses do it because they think after 20* years they will do it in CIV DIV .....I know one thing after 25 years Im not going to be spannering.

I always told Potential Recruits and new lads to my Sections that there was never a stupid question, if you don't know ask.........However after reading some of the bone questions that people ask on ARRSE I might be wrong and there are some extremely STUPID QUESTIONS.
