Discuss British muslim applying for an officers role in Regular Officer Recruiting on The Army Rumour Service; Are you a decent, honest, loyal subject of the Crown? If so I wouldn't worry about your religion. (As long as you're not a cock!) Good luck!...

I was on a supply boat in the Persian Gulf a few years back and in conversation with the skipper it turned out he was a Muslim. I'd assumed he wasn't as I'd noticed him eating and drinking during the day (it was Ramadan) but he said that as he was on duty on the bridge and often at the wheel (small vessel) that it would be irresponsible not to be fed and watered and that his religion allowed for such circumstances.

Coming off watch one day B-i-L went into the wardroom & saw a huge pile of food & being a bit peckish tucked in.

Disaster, it turned out that the food was rations for the floppies who were fasting & intended for when the sun went down. These rations were known as the Ramadanwiches...
You've just reminded me of a prison officer who when dishing out the night time snacks burst into song
'I am the Ramadan man I come from down your way...' can't recall the other words.

Having worked with local contractors in Afghan through Ramadan, they certainly used their faith at every opportunity. However my Muslim lads (British Soldiers), were fine. We planned ahead to make sure they were comfortable with the working conditions/feeding arrangements (as best you can when on ops).

As for other cultures in the Army, at Sandhurst we celebrated thanks giving with our American platoon commander, Eid with the Muslim overseas cadets and celebrated/never heard the end of the 2008 grand slam victory (I am also Welsh for all you Taff-bashes).

Also, contrary to belief, there are circumstances where a Muslim can eat pig. I believe it is allowed after 3 days starving with no other food available.

Nope, Pakistan Army. Unsurprisingly, in the late 70s and early 80s some young Scottish lads with an Asian background, who wanted to soldier, felt that it might offer more of a career / less of a hassle. Our CO had done a tour at the Pakistani Staff College, went recruiting.

You never know, there might be some ex-IDF and ex-Indian Army types around. Our OC HQ had a family friend that he failed to recruit who'd done the former - but given that one of our guys had done a operational tour commanding a heavy mortar battery at the top of a rather high glacier, the latter might have been interesting... (the other spent his time facing off the Soviets during their try at pacifying Afghanistan)...
